Wynyatt Street

A sensitive refurbishment of a Grade II listed Georgian terraced house, the project focused on restoring the architectural integrity of the property while adapting it to support contemporary family life.

The design approach was rooted in repair, reinstatement, and the careful removal of later interventions that had eroded the building’s character. Unsympathetic modern additions, most notably PVC windows, were replaced with high-quality timber windows and traditionally detailed elements appropriate to the period. Where original features had been lost, they were reintroduced with the help of archival research.

Internally, the historic plan form was reinstated. The principal ground floor reception rooms were reinstated while the kitchen was reconfigured on the lower ground floor to create a more practical arrangement for daily use. These modest spatial adjustments have significantly improved the functionality of the home while preserving the building’s original layout.

During the work, layers of historic fabric were carefully revealed and repaired. Original pine floorboards were uncovered beneath modern carpet and cement renders were stripped back to the underlying structure. Externally, breathable lime was applied to the brickwork replacing the damaged cement render to release trapped moisture within the masonry.

The result is a quiet, conservation-led reconstruction that balances sensitive historic repair with functional modern living.
